The sculpture is now in situ after a tricky installation on a steep slope. The decision was made to have the base of the tree at the top of the bank to make an emphasis on the sculpture’s weight. The base is ‘rooted’ to the ground, with the trunk and branches resting over the contours … Continue reading »
Nearly Ready For Installation
The sanding is now complete. The work is still in eight separate sections, I need to prepare dowel joints for the sculpture’s installation at Broomhill.
Sanding
I am now on the final sanding stage. I have found the smaller, thinner links more complicated to shape as there is less material to work with. Due to the wet weather I have moved most of the work inside. These images show eight metres, about half of the sculpture’s total length. … Continue reading »
First Section Almost Finished
With help from Daniel, introduced in my previous post, one section is nearly complete. Although there is a lot of work left to do the finished sculpture is beginning to emerge. The soft, white appearance of the sanded Ash will contrast brilliantly with the slightly deeper colour of the bark. I shall apply … Continue reading »
A New Member Of The Project
After ten days of carving I have called in my friend Daniel Collier to lend a hand. Daniel studied as an illustrator and is developing wildlife photography within his own practice. As well as an artist, he is an experienced welder. His task here has been to sand the rough carving with an angle grinder, … Continue reading »
The Project So Far…
In terms of carving, I am just past the halfway point. Once each link is detached there will still be a lot of refining and sanding to do. My original plan was to keep the sculpture whole, but there came a point when I had to cut one branch into two sections in order … Continue reading »
First Day of Carving – The Process
End of day one: this link took three hours, but there is still a lot of shaping and refining to do. I have documented the main stages of the carving process so far: 1. After measuring and marking out where the links will be, four segments are removed around the trunk leaving the … Continue reading »
The Tree
This is the tree that I shall be carving for the Broomhill project. It is Ash, 15 metres in length.
Visiting Broomhill, March 30th
I spent Friday exploring possible locations for my sculpture. I met Rinus van de Sande, owner of Broomhill, who gave me a tour of the gardens and the NSP site. The images below show a potential installation site on a slope at the base of the valley. With this location in mind I am … Continue reading »
My Studio
If all goes to plan I will start my carving on April 2nd. Then, for the following month and a half, this will be my studio space. Pictured below is Chris Batchelor. Chris manages this woodland and is providing me with a tree for my sculpture as well as the space to work in. … Continue reading »
